CHAPTER 13

“Mikey, how ya doing?” Lance asked. “Listen, I’ve discovered some interesting facts.”

“Go on.” Mikey mouthed to his parents that it was Lance. He grabbed a pencil and prepared to write on his notepad by the phone. “I’m ready.”

“How’s your dad, by the way?”

“He’s fine. He’s back at work already. Go ahead…” Mikey was ready to uncover some truths.

“That’s great. Okay, listen. By now you’ve probably learned about the brother being shipped off to England, right?” Lance asked.

“Yeah, how did you know?”

“I knew you’d meet with the Society of Historical Homes ladies and one of them has a connection. Right?”

“Yep.”

“Okay, so, back at the turn of the century, it seems there was an investigation opened into the death of Annabelle Sherman thanks to her Nanny. Her nanny’s name was Elizabeth Waters, or Libby as the kids called her. She was close to the children, but especially to Annabelle. The little brother was the one to confide to the nanny about what he had seen. He did this before he was sent to England.”

“Whoa.” Mikey scribbled as fast as he could.

“So, what I uncovered from friends in England is that the nanny tried to go public. She was accused of extortion which never panned out, but the sister, Ruby Sherman, did a great job of ruining her. She made sure the nanny would never work again.” Lance paused. “Excuse me. I needed a sip of my soda.”

“That’s okay.” Mikey waited and wondered what else was to come.

“Next, my friend in England said a story was written, but never released. Not sure why, but Ruby Sherman—”

“Held press conference to stop the story from being released, right?” Mikey interjected.

“Yeah,” Lance replied. “Don’t tell me. The ladies from the Society told you?”

“Yep. I guess they knew about it,” Mikey said.

“So that’s a dead end. But I found the oldest living relative to the nanny. One Eliza Ackerman of Illinois. She is in her late nineties now, but she was willing to talk to me about what she knew. She, too, said her aunt, the nanny Elizabeth, always told her that it was Ruby Sherman who pushed Annabelle down the stairs and the little brother saw it,” Lance explained.

Mikey finished writing then read what he had written. “Something has to be done. Do you think she’ll talk to me?”

“Unfortunately, she passed away, Mikey,” Lance said.

“Oh,” Mikey rubbed his tired face.

“Let me know if you need anything else,” Lance said.

“Glad you asked. The ladies said that the governor might be willing to talk to us about all this.” Mikey felt his heart racing. He looked over his shoulder and saw his dad leaning in to hear.

“Seriously?” Lance could be heard on the other end of the phone. “I’ll make the phone calls.”

“No, I need to go too!” Mikey exclaimed. He glanced over at his father who had a more serious look on his face now. “Yes.” Mikey mouthed to him.

“I need to ask him some questions first, Mikey. Over the phone.” Lance took another sip of his soda.
